Becoming people who offer hospitality to strangers requires us to open our hearts time and again to the tension created by our fear of “the other.” That is why many wisdom traditions highlight the creative possibilities of a heart broken open instead of apart. Only from such a heart can hospitality flow – toward the stranger
and toward all that we find alien and unsettling.
– Parker J. Palmer
We invite you to explore the practice of true hospitality at our fifth annual Habits of the Heart retreat called “Making Our Home with Other.” The retreat takes place JULY 31 – AUGUST 3, 2017, near Chicago, IL and features interactive learning experiences with both author Parker J. Palmer and singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer.
The word hospitality has lost its daring. Many clergy and people of faith seek to create safe space for differences to thrive but may struggle to move conversations from comfortable to catalyzing. We wonder what will happen if we truly “go there” in our relationships. We wonder what will happen if we fully “show up” as ourselves. True hospitality is a great risk, and, yet, leaders who are able to become at home with that which is “other” within and among them are better equipped to develop skills of humility, empathy, and courage in the diverse communities they serve.
It’s these leadership skills that we’ll cultivate over the course of our four-day retreat as we become a “living laboratory” of community life and explore our relationship to “the other” within it. We’ll also engage in:
A mixture of large group sessions that include teaching, storytelling, and singing and
small group sessions that include reflection, sharing, and solitude.
A space to go deeper with a community group of 20 participants, led by trained Courage & Renewal® facilitators using the Circle of Trust® approach.
Two dynamic talks from Parker J. Palmer, as well as time for interacting with him in an evening Q&A.
A fast-paced, fun-filled songwriting workshop with Carrie Newcomer in which we’ll compose a group song that integrates our learnings from the week.
A time of personal retreat, rest, and renewal.
Registration for this retreat is now open. Find more information about cost, lodging, and travel at bit.ly/HabitsofHeart. Financial aid is available.
