Congregations from across the Fairway District will come together on Sunday afternoon, February 28, 3:00 to 4:45pm, at Jonesboro UMC for a special event “Celebrating Connection: Congregations & Communities.” Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Mike Ward. You will enjoy Mike’s message and take home helpful information for your congregation’s ministry in your local community.
Dr. Mike Ward is an educational leader with over 36 years of public education service. He is an associate member of the graduate faculty in educational leadership at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also president of The MEWs Educational Consulting, Inc. and serves as a consultant to state and local education leaders on matters related to leadership, school improvement, strategic planning, and assessment. From 1997 to 2004, Mike served two terms as State Superintendent of Public Instruction of North Carolina. During Mike’s tenure, the state earned a reputation for rapid progress in the performance of its public schools.
His past experience includes service as a local superintendent of schools. He has also been a teacher, coach, and high school principal. He is a published author and researcher, writing on a variety of professional topics. Dr. Ward is a past recipient of North Carolina’s Superintendent of the Year award. A three-time graduate of North Carolina State University, he received the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Dr. Ward’s wife, Hope Morgan Ward, is the bishop of the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. The Wards have two children and two grandchildren.
Community & School Gardening
Share a meal and/or teach a person to garden for a lifetime of fresh healthy produce! Join with UMC community gardeners on Sunday, February 28, 2016 @ Jonesboro UMC during a “Meeting Basic Needs” breakout session and share best practices for establishing and expanding community and public school gardens. Educator Joy Brown (F-V UMC/Wake Co) and Pastor Dena White (Norman Charge/Richmond Co) will share in this interactive and fast-paced experience of networking and shared best practices. Help resource our children and families for a healthier future through the fellowship of community and school gardening!

The Fairway and Capital Districts will jointly sponsor a “Church Communication Clinic” featuring Scott Vaughan, of Scott Vaughan Communications on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 at St. Francis UMC located at 2965 Kildaire Farm Rd. Cary, NC. The cost of the clinic is $20 per attendee or $50 per church for 3 or more attendees.
