Unlike many other diseases that are awaiting a cure, malaria was eliminated in the US in the 1950’s. However, in Sub -Saharan Africa, malaria continues to kill a person every 60 seconds. But there is hope! Imagine No Malaria is part of a global partnership and together with our partners, our generation can beat malaria once and for all. The Fairway District Skeeter Run/Walk 5K is part of that partnership to help wipe out Malaria.
Here are some details:
- Race Registration is $15.
- You may pre-register at http://fairwaydistrictnc.org/fairway-district-skeeter-runwalk-5k/ until April 6 using a credit card or Paypal, or by mailing your check to District Office after completing your on-line registration.
- Walk-up registration will also be available on April 12 (day of the event) beginning at 1:00pm. To register at the event you will need to pay by cash or check only. Checks should be made payable to “Conference Treasurer – Raleigh Area.”

“Daniel” (not his real name) was on the move again. Mid-way through third grade, Daniel’s teacher was notified that his family would be moving at the end of the week. He had already been in ten public schools. A UMC volunteer serving weekly in the elementary school as a literacy tutor was asked by the classroom teacher to help him create a Memory Book. The volunteer and Daniel toured the school he would be leaving. In each place, Daniel wrote or dictated a paragraph of memories to accompany the pictures taken with a cell phone and printed on a school printer. While Daniel was out of the room, the classroom teacher told his classmates about Daniel’s upcoming move and invited the children to create personalized cards as a surprise. Daniel and his classmates had appropriate “closure and moving on” experiences in part because the school and the church have a partnership. Church volunteers are able to expand classroom experiences as “helping hands” and lives are enriched.
Additional information about becoming a “Congregation for Children” is available on the Fairway District web site http://fairwaydistrictnc.org/congregations-for-children-c4c/c4c-resources/ or by contacting Elaine Lilliston at email@example.com.
Youth/Young Adult At-large Lay Members to Annual Conference
Each district has been allotted At-large Lay Members to Annual Conference (LMAC) for the 2015 Annual Conference in Wilmington, June 10 to 13. Using these at-large positions, the cabinet is intentionally working to recruit youth and young adults to serve as equalizing members. The Discipline states that “The Lay Members shall have been for the two years next preceding their election members of The United Methodist Church and shall have been active participants in The United Methodist Church for at least four years preceding their election.”
Would you like to serve as an At-large LMAC? Are there youth/young adults in your congregation that are willing to serve? If so, please contact Lou Ann Allred, Fairway ADS, at firstname.lastname@example.org. More information about the 2015 Annual Conference is available at https://nccumc.org/secretary/annual-conference/ .
