Basic Course: Lay Servant Ministries
(Instructor will be Rev. David Woodhouse, pastor of Smyrna UMC in Robbins)
Required book: Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course by Sandy/Brian Jackson
God calls every Christian to a life of servanthood as a disciple of Jesus Christ. In the Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course, Sandy and Brian Jackson discuss processes to help individuals discern and respond to God’s particular call on their lives. They encourage each person to recognize and employ his or her spiritual gifts for the church to become what God intended it to be. This course invites participants to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in discipleship. It offers guidelines for optimal communication in leadership and presents numerous types of ministries in which lay servants may assume roles. Throughout the study, thoughtful questions provide excellent opportunities for individual consideration and group discussion.
Advanced Course: Life Together in the UM Connection (UM Polity)
(Instructor will be Rev. Ray Broadwell, Fairway District Superintendent)
Required book: Polity, Practice, and the Mission of The United Methodist Church by Thomas Edward Frank (If you would like this in an eBook you can choose this option: Polity, Practice, and the Mission of the UMC)
This in-depth analysis of the connection between United Methodist polity and theology addresses ways in which historical developments have shaped–and continue to shape–the organization of the church.
This revised edition incorporates the actions of The United Methodist General Conference, 2004. The book discusses continuing reforms of the church’s plan for baptism and church membership, as well as the emergence of deacon’s orders and other changes to ordained ministry procedures. The text is now cross-referenced to the Book of Discipline, 2004, including the revised order of disciplinary chapters and paragraph numbering. Denominational statistics are updated, along with references to recent works on The United Methodist Church and American religious life.
Advanced Course: Discover Your Spiritual Gifts
(Instructor will be Rev. Linda Harris, Connectional Ministries of NC Conference)
Required book: Each One a Minister by William J. Carter
Each One a Minister, a revised and expanded edition of Carter’s previous book by the same title, begins with a study of Ephesians. Carter engages the reader in discovering the meaning of church, ministry, and gifts, from the early church up to the present. As a follow-up to the Bible study, readers and study groups look at ways in which God’s gifts are practical as well as spiritual. Four ministry categories, closely connected to the congregational primary task (receive, relate, equip, send), are identified; and Scripture readings, activities, and ways to implement specific ministries are suggested. Designed to encourage individuals to discover God’s call to ministry in their own lives, Each One a Minister leads us toward practical ways to use our gifts in ministries in our congregations and in our communities. For clergy, lay leaders, study groups, and others seeking to identify and use their gifts in meaningful ways.
