Men Making a Difference = Watch D.O.G.S
Adult male role models serving one day per school year as “Watch D.O.G.S” are making a positive difference in our public schools. The annual program often begins with a “Pizza Sign-Up/ Orientation Supper” early in the school year for dads and students. Following the school sign-up, this makes a wonderful project for men of the partnering church to “fill-in” the days to serve with children without a “Dad of Great Students” to share the day. These children/youth are THRILLED to be a “host for the day” and eager to share their school setting with men from the community.
Men sign up to serve one day per year. Duties vary with local school needs and often include assisting/greeting students arriving for another great day of academic achievement; walking/monitoring school hallways; sharing lunch with students; and, spending time in the classroom listening to younger children read or sharing class time with youth. Promotional materials are designed for two age levels: elementary and youth. An official “Watch D.O.G.S.” trainer will be in Garner on July 31, 2015. Contact Elaine Lilliston (919-567-9427 or email@example.com) for additional information.
In February, each district UMC and/or UMW unit was invited to provide the money for at least seven (7) filled book bags at $25.00 each for the District El Camino School Project in Siler City. The time is drawing near to prepare for another school year and there is a desperate need for more funding. The 596 book bags have been ordered and delivered. Now the supplies must be purchased and, even though they are being purchased at wholesale prices, there is a need for about another thousand dollars.
Please make this a matter of prayer and send what your church/UMW unit can to:
Alberta Settle, UMW Treasurer
166 Juniper Creek Blvd.
Pinehurst, NC 28374
Thank you for assisting a student to have a successful start to the school year by having the necessary tools for learning.
Anne Lomax and Berniece Hunsucker, Co-Chairs, Fairway District UMW Social Action Committee
