Invitation to the Laity from Bishop Ward and Gary Locklear
Dear Friends in Christ,
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ.
We celebrate with you the ministry of the laity in The United Methodist Church and invite you to a great event particularly for laity on Sunday afternoon, November 15, at 3:00pm, at St. Francis United Methodist Church, 2965 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary, NC 27511. Seating for 800 is available on a first-come basis – please carpool. Doors will open at 2:00pm with a book signing starting at 2:15pm.
Bob Goff, noted gospel-proclaimer, amazing storyteller and best-selling author, will be our special guest speaker. Bob describes himself as the Founder and Chief balloon inflator of Restore International. Others describe him as “one of the most amazing people I have ever met!” How delightful! We are thrilled that Bob will spend the second weekend in November in our Annual Conference, first with our youth at Pilgrimage 2015 on Friday and Saturday before speaking at this grand event for laity on Sunday afternoon.
We encourage you to join the Cabinet and Leadership Team of our annual conference in reading his book, “Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Lie in an Ordinary World,” a New York Times bestseller. Visit bobgoff.com for sneak previews of what we will experience together on November 15!
Clergy gatherings have been convened in August so that clergy might spend time together in worship, connecting, learning and equipping for ministry. This event is convened in that same spirit – for laity so that together, we might worship, connect, learn and go forth ready to love and give!
Bishop Hope Morgan Ward
Gary Locklear, Conference Lay Leader
“Strengthening Spiritual Life in the Congregation: Joy in the Journey” to be held on Thursday, November 12, from 9:30am to 3:00pm at Jonesboro UMC, 407 West Main Street, Sanford, NC.
You are invited to come learn how to share with others about prayer life, listening to the Scriptures, walking a Labyrinth, and experiencing the sacredness of everyday life and of the sacraments. Take-home resources will also be offered. Lunch will be provided (with a basket for donations) so reservations will be required. Their invitation is open to both laity and clergy.
Please click here and make your reservations (with any special dietary needs) by November 6. If you have questions, please contact Judy Stephens, organizer of this event, at 919-552-4673 (home), 919-815-8836 (cell) or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Fairway District will host Dr. Marty Cauley for discussion about his recent book Dying to Go on Vacation on November 19 (10-11:30am) at Lemon Springs UMC, 7225 Lemon Springs Road, Sanford, NC. All clergy and interested laity are invited to join.
From the book: “What are you waiting for? Is there something you are putting off until tomorrow? What if suddenly all of your tomorrows were taken away? We are all dying, but we live like we have all the time in the world. Dying to go On Vacation is the inspirational retelling of my journey of faith after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. It is a humorous, and sometimes heart breaking, story of positively dealing with why bad things happen to good people and what to do when the world you were building seems to fall apart.”
