June 16-18, 2016 – Annual Conference @ Greenville Convention Center, Greenville,NC
The Missions Warehouse at 3MC (676 Community Drive, Goldsboro) has an urgent need for you to volunteer. AGAPE Boxes for Armenia, as well as health kits and school kits, are being processed to ensure a timely arrival in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh for Christmas on January 6, 2016. The process is labor intensive work and a work of love. Bill Haddock has set up a couple of urgent work days and could use as many volunteers as possible:
Saturday, October 31 from 8:45 am to 2:30 pm
Thursday, November 5 from 8:45 am to 4pm
Saturday, November 7 from 8:45 am to ~ finished completely
Contact Bill Haddock, NC Conference Mission Interpreter, 910.262.3831 for more information or to let him know when you can be there to help. Thank you!
Young retirees ENJOY volunteering and making a difference in our local communities! Steve Kish serves two times per week in one or more of the four second grade classes at Lincoln Heights Elementary School. Down the hall, Gil Buker serves with the Mary Blankenship’s kindergarten class. Mary has said, “I have Gil Buker in my class each Tuesday and Thursday. It is wonderful! He is such a great help and the kids really LOVE having him here.” Steve’s neighbor Ken was encouraged to volunteer and is thankful for the opportunity to make a difference locally. To be blessed to chat with the men, one quickly discovers giving oneself in community outreach is a rewarding and wonderful high point in each man’s week.
“Congregations for Children” (C4C) seeks to help local UMCs link in uniquely defined ways to impact our local communities. Gil, Ken and Steve serve in a school with high food insecurity, low standardized test scores, and in an economically vulnerable part of the Fuquay-Varina community. Fuquay-Varina UMC is intentionally partnering with Lincoln Heights Elementary School this year and the church and community are strengthened.
Contact Fairway District C4C Coordinator Elaine Lilliston at 919-567-9427 or firstname.lastname@example.org to share your C4C story and/or for additional information on having a successful partnership with an area school in your community. Exciting things are happening throughout our Fairway District!
Dear Friends in Christ,
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ.
We celebrate with you the ministry of the laity in The United Methodist Church and invite you to a great event particularly for laity on Sunday afternoon, November 15, at 3:00pm, at St. Francis United Methodist Church, 2965 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary, NC. Doors will open at 2:00pm with a book signing starting at 2:15pm.
Bob Goff, noted gospel-proclaimer, amazing storyteller and best-selling author, will be our special guest speaker. Bob describes himself as the Founder and Chief balloon inflator of Restore International. Others describe him as “one of the most amazing people I have ever met!” We are thrilled that Bob will spend the second weekend in November in our Annual Conference, first with our youth at Pilgrimage 2015 on Friday and Saturday before speaking at this grand event for laity on Sunday afternoon. Visit bobgoff.com for sneak previews of what we will experience together on November 15!
Clergy gatherings have been convened in August so that clergy might spend time together in worship, connecting, learning and equipping for ministry. This event is convened in that same spirit – for laity so that together, we might worship, connect, learn and go forth ready to love and give!
Bishop Hope Morgan Ward
Gary Locklear, Conference Lay Leader
The Fairway District will host Dr. Marty Cauley for discussion about his recent book Dying to Go on Vacation on November 19 (10-11:30am) at Lemon Springs UMC, 7225 Lemon Springs Road, Sanford, NC. All clergy and interested laity are invited to join.
From the book: “What are you waiting for? Is there something you are putting off until tomorrow? What if suddenly all of your tomorrows were taken away? We are all dying, but we live like we have all the time in the world. Dying to go On Vacation is the inspirational retelling of my journey of faith after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. It is a humorous, and sometimes heart breaking, story of positively dealing with why bad things happen to good people and what to do when the world you were building seems to fall apart.”
