November 30 – Pastoral/Congregational Assessment due
Your District Superintendent sent an email to each pastor and Pastor-Parish Relations Committee chairperson earlier this week. This email asked them to work as a team in order to lead the congregation to assess the ministry of each church. Assessments are a shared exercise of accountability in the community of faith. This assessment provides opportunity for celebration and growth through accountability as we watch over one another in love. For this exercise, the pastor and each member of the Pastor-Parish Parish Relations Committee should answer questions individually and then meet together to compose a document reflective of all. Fairway District UMW Annual Meeting and Local Officers Training (LOTS)
This combination meeting will be Saturday morning, October 17, at Brown’s Chapel UMC, 355 Chicken Bridge Road, Pittsboro. This day begins at 9:30 am and should conclude by 12 noon. Welcoming time includes light refreshments. For more information, contact Angela Crisp-Sears, Fairway District UMW President email@example.com, 919-545-0636. As always all women are invited, especially those who want to learn more about United Methodist Women.
The Fairway District will host Dr. Marty Cauley for discussion about his recent book Dying to Go on Vacation on November 19 (10-11:30am) at Lemon Springs UMC, 7225 Lemon Springs Road, Sanford, NC. All clergy and interested laity are invited to join.
From the book: “What are you waiting for? Is there something you are putting off until tomorrow? What if suddenly all of your tomorrows were taken away? We are all dying, but we live like we have all the time in the world. Dying to go On Vacation is the inspirational retelling of my journey of faith after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. It is a humorous, and sometimes heart breaking, story of positively dealing with why bad things happen to good people and what to do when the world you were building seems to fall apart.”

A joyful kindergarten teacher shared, “I need volunteers to read to my children. My children need to realize a book has a front cover, a back cover and we read from left to right!” She continued and shared a struggle of a family. Last year, a mother confessed she did not read nightly to her children as “the children are in bed when I get off work.” Sometimes, families are doing the very best each can do to cobble together several jobs amongst the adults to simply put food on the table and a roof over their heads. Reading to children becomes, in some cases, a luxury. Reading simple books to young children and/or listening to beginning readers provides the tools and encouragement needed for children to experience scholastic success. Statistically, children who are reading well by the end of third grade are 4 to 5 times as likely to graduate from high school as non-reading third graders. We can make a difference with listening ears!
Contact your local public school administrator today to set up an appointment to ask what help might be needed. “Congregations for Children” is an adaptable outreach within communities served by United Methodist churches to ensure our students and educators have the resources needed for success. We are seeking to make a positive impact on the K-3 literacy rate, ensure basic needs for our students, and encourage parental/community involvement in our public schools.
Please feel welcome to contact Elaine Lilliston (firstname.lastname@example.org) to share success stories and/or to inquire about “C4C” and how to become involved in supporting local public schools in your community.
Come be inspired by guest speaker Bob Goff (www.bobgoff.com) on Sunday, November 15, as he challenges us around our 2015 NC Conference SERVE theme. “I used to be afraid of failing at something that really mattered to me, but now I’m more afraid of succeeding at things that don’t matter,” he says. The best-selling author of LOVE DOES, Bob is a down-to-earth speaker who encourages everyone to get to the “do” part of life. Choosing to live audaciously, Bob donates profits from Love Does to Restore International, a human rights nonprofit he founded, and to The Mentoring Project.
The free event is November 15 at Saint Francis UMC, 2965 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary. A love offering supports “Imagine No Malaria.” Seating for 800 is available on a first-come basis – please carpool. Doors open at 2:00pm with a book signing starting at 2:15pm, Bob’s presentation at 3pm, and book signing until 4:30pm.
