Sitting with Sunny: Living Between Gratitude and Hope

Posted on

As one year draws to a close and another begins, many of us find ourselves living in an in-between space.

We look back with gratitude for moments of joy, for relationships that sustained us, and for the ways God met us in both expected and surprising places. And yet, we also look ahead with hope, not because everything is resolved, but because we trust that God is not finished with us yet.

This in-between space can feel tender. Some of us end the year with full hearts. Others carry grief, fatigue, unanswered questions, or quiet disappointments. Often, we hold all of this at the same time—gratitude and weariness, hope and uncertainty.

Scripture reminds us that this is not a failure of faith; it is often where faith is formed. The words “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases” come not from a season of ease, but from the book of Lamentations, a testimony written in the aftermath of loss, displacement, and grief. In the midst of devastation, the writer dares to say that God’s mercy is still present, still renewing, still enough for the day at hand. “Great is your faithfulness” is not a denial of pain; it is trust spoken from within it [Lamentations 3:22–23].

The people of God have always lived between remembrance and promise. They looked back to see how God had been faithful, and forward to trust God’s presence in what was still unfolding. They did not always know what the next season would bring, but they knew who went with them.

As we prepare to welcome a new year, we are not asked to have everything figured out. We are simply invited to notice where God has been faithful and to place our trust again in the God who walks with us into what is yet to come.

Gratitude keeps us grounded. Hope keeps us moving.

May you rest in what has been given,
receive what you cannot yet name,
and trust that grace will meet you
one step at a time. Amen.
